Your mail is yours: export everything in one click
A good email service isn't the one that traps you, but the one that lets you leave without friction. With nanimail you can download all your mail whenever you want, in a standard format any app can open.
There's a question people almost never ask when choosing email for their business, and yet it says a lot about who's on whose side: if you decide to leave one day, can you take your mail with you?
At many services the honest answer is "sort of". You can forward messages one at a time, copy and paste, or wrestle with exports that take days and arrive in a format only that platform understands. The friction isn't an accident: the harder it is to leave, the more people stay out of sheer exhaustion. We prefer the opposite.
Downloading your mail, for real
In the settings of any nanimail mailbox there's a button: Download my mail. Tap it, and your browser assembles a complete copy of that mailbox (received, sent and archived) with its attachments, and hands it to you as an .mbox file.
There's no waiting list, no "we'll email you in a few days", no special procedure. It's your mail; downloading it should feel as ordinary as opening it.
What an .mbox file is, and why we chose it
.mbox is a standard, open format for storing email. It isn't ours, and that's exactly the point: the most common desktop mail apps understand it, so you can open your copy or import it into another tool without depending on anyone.
Choosing a standard format over a proprietary one is a deliberate decision. A file only nanimail could read wouldn't be a copy of your mail; it would be another way of tying you down. We'd rather hand you something that works anywhere, even far away from us.
No plan locks
Export isn't a premium feature. It's not reserved for the most expensive plan or gated behind a limit. Any mailbox, on any plan, can download its mail.
Charging you to reclaim what's already yours would contradict the very idea of "your mail is yours". So we don't.
An important copy leaves a trace
Downloading an entire mailbox is a sensitive action: it's literally all your mail leaving in a single file. That's why, every time an export begins, we send a notice to the account's email and record that it happened.
If it was you, there's nothing to do. And if you ever see that notice without having asked for it, that's precisely the signal you'd want in order to act in time. Data portability and data security aren't at odds: you can take your mail with complete freedom, and at the same time know when someone does.
Why this matters to us
nanimail comes from a simple idea: your business tools should work for you, not lock you in. Mail you can take with you is mail you keep by choice, not for lack of an exit.
We hope you stay with us for a long time. But we'd rather it be because the service serves you, not because leaving is a headache. Your mail is yours, and with nanimail the door is always open.
